Matthew M. Buschi
About
"I pursued a career in law so I could use my training in logic and rhetoric to fight for my clients. I really enjoy discovering not just what the law is, but why the law is what it is."
— Matthew M. Buschi
Matthew Buschi is a business litigation and appellate attorney with over a decade of experience representing parties in complex commercial disputes at both the trial and appellate levels. Matt's practice focuses on business divorces, shareholder and partnership disputes, commercial landlord-tenant matters, construction litigation, and civil appeals.
Matt began his legal career representing minority shareholders in shareholder oppression lawsuits, studying under one of the leading practitioners in the field. "I got great personal satisfaction from helping the shareholders with the least amount of say obtain some real value for their ownership," he explains. This early focus on advocating for those with limited power in business relationships shaped his approach to litigation and fueled his passion for leveling the playing field in complex commercial disputes.
What drives Matt's practice is his love of strategy, competition, and argument. "I enjoy finding solutions to complex questions, I enjoy a well-played game of strategy and oration," he notes. This competitive spirit, combined with meticulous preparation, has resulted in numerous summary judgments, successful appeals, and favorable settlements for his clients. His track record includes obtaining reversal of adverse trial court judgments, securing multi-million dollar settlements in construction disputes, and negotiating creative business divorce solutions.
Matt's clients appreciate his thoroughness and preparation. They know when he walks into a courtroom or mediation, he's often better prepared than anyone else in the room. But what they value most is his straightforward, personable approach. "I take a friendly approach to my clients, letting them know I've got their back, and trying to treat them as if they were my only client," Matt explains. When a new client comes to him with a problem, his first question is simple: "What solution are you looking for?" He then provides a clear-eyed analysis of the paths to get there.
Matt is particularly skilled in appellate practice, having successfully represented clients in various cases before the Texas Courts of Appeals and the Texas Supreme Court. His appellate victories include reversing adverse trial court judgments, obtaining affirmations of favorable rulings, and securing remands on critical procedural issues.
Originally from Bangor, Pennsylvania, Matt moved to Texas with his family as a teenager and pursued his undergraduate degree here. After attending law school on the East Coast, he returned to Houston to build his legal career. He is recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer and has been honored as Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch.
When not advocating for clients, Matt enjoys reading science fiction and fantasy novels, working in his yard, playing video games with the kids, and listening to history podcasts. He's also an avid griller and smoker of meats, and thoroughly enjoys a good debate or philosophical discussion with his peers.
